Professional Organizations


Professional organizations offer a valuable opportunity for adult educators to expand their knowledge, become actively engaged in national issues, and contribute to the growth of the profession.  Several of the organizations sponsor annual conferences with a diverse range of topics in addition to publishing noteworthy journals and periodicals that address national adult education needs.

The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE)

AAACE publishes two of the nation's leading periodicals in education and training: Adult Learning magazine and the scholarly journal Adult Education Quarterly. AAACE also publishes books, monographs and booklets on a variety of adult education topics.

National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium (NAEPDC)

NAEPDC, formed in 1990 by state directors of adult education, provides training institutes, publications, and technical assistance to member states on program planning, in addition to a variety of other relevant issues.


National Association for Developmental Education (NADE)


National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs (NAASLN)

NAASLN is an association for those who serve adults with special learning needs.  NAASLN members include educators, trainers, employers and human service providers.  NAASLN advocates for adults with special learning needs in national policy, legislation, and funding; provides professional development and technical assistance; disseminates relevant information and research; increases awareness of the holistic nature and best practices for serving adults with special learning needs; and promotes best practices for effective services.

Voice for Adult Literacy United for Education (VALUE)

VALUE is a national organization of adult learners.  VALUE’s mission is to expand the role of adult learners in adult literacy efforts in the United States.  VALUE has five key targets: recruitment of new learners, retention of learners, resource development, reforming education by getting involved in their adult education programs, and research.

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL)

TESOL publishes two serials: a scholarly journal (TESOL Quarterly) and a practical magazine (Essential Teacher). TESOL also publishes an electronic bulletin of employment opportunities (Placement E-Bulletin) and a newsletter of headlines and resource links related to the field (TESOL Connections). It also publishes books and materials on a wide range of theoretical and practical topics as well as professional papers and resources for newcomers.
